Hi there. My name is Rohan. I speak five languages and translate Japanese for a living.
I created this site to help you learn real-world Japanese using lots of examples and explanations.
Why learn Japanese?
With the world getting smaller every day, speaking a foreign language helps bridge cultural and linguistic gaps. Knowing even a little Japanese will go a long way toward building relationships and making friends.
If you’re anything like me, you will also find learning Japanese a fun process. Whether trying to better understand your favorite anime or to travel around Japan, the road to fluency is a rewarding one.
Japanese can also be useful in your career, especially when combined with another skill. There is demand for all sorts of bilingual professionals in a wide range of areas including (but not limited to):
- Commerce
- Finance
- Medicine
- IT
- Engineering
- Science
Japanese bilinguals apparently make ¥520,000 per month on average (source: Bilingual average salaries in Japan), which is well above the general average of about ¥300,000 in Japan.
Why do bilinguals tend to have higher salaries?
The answer comes down to basic supply and demand. There simply aren’t enough skilled bilingual Japanese speakers to go around.
To take advantage of this trend, set about studying Japanese today. Getting one of the JLPT certificates is a good start.
How about translation?
It’s also possible to become a translator like me. As with the careers mentioned above, it does help to have another marketable skill or solid experience that will allow you to translate in a more specialized area.
I plan to write some articles on how to become a Japanese translator in the near future. Watch this space!
